Max Schieble, better known as Elbows, is a Brooklyn-based songwriter, vocalist, and genre-bending producer raised in the Bay Area. Combining elements of old school hip hop, futuristic electronic production, and bygone jazz instrumentation, with deliberate hooks, expansive vocal harmonies, and sporadic sampling, he creates ever-changing soundscapes all filtered through a sharp pop sensibility. Some folks – Elbows included – would describe the sound as that of "time travel.”
This May Elbows will release his debut project, the Corduroy EP. After an intensive stretch of recording sessions that saw Elbows travel back and forth between San Francisco and New York, he amassed a body of work chronicling his upbringing in the foggy Bay Area. Corduroy serves as an encapsulating introduction to this larger collection, with songs shifting from dusty boom bap beats to oafish 808s, and from jazzy guitar chops to cloudy synth beds. Throughout the array of textures and tempos, Schieble’s comfortably peculiar persona emerges through witty, yet introspective lyrics, with song topics touching on self realization, relationship standoffs, and supporting family through dark times.
The Corduroy EP is due out May 19th, along with an accompanying product collection, featuring cassette tapes, a pin collaboration with New York brand, Pintrill, and more. A slew of east coast dates will take Elbows on the road throughout the summer.
"Brooklyn musician and singer-songwriter Max Schieble is Elbows, one of the borough's rising soul architects. His music is a little less obvious and a little more wayward than one might expect from soul, but that's what makes it special. It's somewhere between BK's Nick Hakim and Australia's Jonit, playfully strange and recorded through a surrealist lens, often experimenting with time and space." – Indie Current
"Bay Area born Brooklyn-based producer and songwriter Elbows (aka Max Schieble) is readying to take hip hop by storm. His beats are wondrous, combining elements of jazz, electronic and old boom bap sounds with interesting, often hilarious samples. His singing style is raspy, but cheery, taking on a fresh new persona for the genre. In addition to his musical stylings, his passions include dabbling in visual art and film, which translates well into his vast sonic landscapes and bright, colorful album art and single artwork." – EARMILK
